Trevor Bauer Suspended for Two Full Seasons
MLB Announces Discipline
New York, NY
Trevor Bauer, a controversial pitcher most recently associated with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, was suspended for two full seasons effective May 3, 2023. The suspension stemmed from an investigation of sexual assault and violation of the league's domestic violence and sexual assault policy.
The investigation concluded that Bauer engaged in "inappropriate conduct" with a woman in California in 2021. Bauer denied the allegations but was placed on administrative leave by Major League Baseball (MLB) after the woman obtained a restraining order against him.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred initially suspended Bauer for 324 games (two seasons) in 2022, but the suspension was overturned by an independent arbitrator later that year. However, Bauer later appealed the decision, prompting MLB to reinstate the suspension indefinitely.
The league's investigation revealed "sufficient evidence" to support the suspension, but Bauer has continued to maintain his innocence. He has since released a statement expressing his disappointment with the decision and vowing to appeal once again.
Bauer's suspension marks a significant setback for the Japanese baseball league and the pitcher's own career. He is one of the most recognizable pitchers in baseball, having previously won a Cy Young Award in 2020 with the Cincinnati Reds. It remains to be seen if Bauer will ever return to the mound after this suspension.
