Lakers Name Dane Johnson Summer League Coach

Johnson, head coach of the South Bay Lakers, will lead the team in the California Classic

JJ Redick will remain heavily involved, but Johnson will be in charge of on-court decisions and strategy.

The Los Angeles Lakers have named Dane Johnson, head coach of the South Bay Lakers, as their head coach for the upcoming California Classic Summer League. Johnson will lead the team in Las Vegas from July 7-17.

JJ Redick, the Lakers' vice president of basketball operations, will remain heavily involved with the team during the summer league, but Johnson will be in charge of on-court decisions and strategy. Redick will be responsible for player personnel decisions and overall team direction.

Johnson has been the head coach of the South Bay Lakers since 2019, leading the team to a 47-33 regular season record and a playoff appearance in his first season. He was previously an assistant coach with the Lakers from 2012-16.

The Lakers will open the California Classic Summer League against the Sacramento Kings on July 7. They will also face the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Clippers, and Phoenix Suns before wrapping up their schedule against the Boston Celtics on July 17.
