## Pete Alonso's 33rd Home Run Powers Mets to Victory ### Alonso's Blast Lifts Mets Past Nationals **New York, NY - August 22, 2023** - Pete Alonso's three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the New York Mets defeated the Washington Nationals 5-3 on Tuesday night at Citi Field. Despite falling behind 2-0 in the top of the first inning, the Mets chipped away at the Nationals' lead in the bottom of the inning. Brandon Nimmo singled, stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff McNeil to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Mets tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on a solo homer by Mark Canha. Alonso then put the Mets ahead for good with his three-run homer off Nationals' starter Josiah Gray in the sixth. Trevor May came on in relief of Chris Bassitt to start the seventh inning and struck out the side. Seth Lugo pitched a scoreless eighth inning, and Edwin Diaz struck out the side in the ninth to earn his 27th save of the season. He now has 10 more home runs than any other player in the league. Alonso is also on pace to break the Mets' single-season home run record of 41, set by Darryl Strawberry in 1988. Alonso is currently on pace to hit 55 home runs this season. ### Mets Win Third Straight The Mets' victory over the Nationals was their third straight win. They are now 69-53 on the season and lead the NL East by 5.5 games over the Atlanta Braves. The Mets will look to continue their winning ways when they host the Nationals in the second game of their series on Wednesday night. Taijuan Walker will start for the Mets, while Patrick Corbin will start for the Nationals.
